Carson High students were truly hot last night. The school took first place in culinary and management categories at the 8th Annual Nevada ProStart Invitational.

Held in Reno this year, the ProStart competition brought students from 26 Nevada high schools for a day of intense cooking and judging. Under the direction of Carson High instructor Penny Reynolds, the Carson High Culinary Team excelled in preparation of a three course meal in 60 minutes using two portable burners as their only heat source. The Carson High Management Team’s victory included presentation of a new restaurant concept with menu, marketing plan, and design in a written proposal with a verbal presentation to judges posing as potential investors. They also created a visual display board and came up with solutions to mini case studies.

Members of ProStart’s winning teams receive scholarships. The ProStart competition helps students to find opportunities in the food-service industry. During April, Nevada’s winning teams will travel from Carson City to the national competition in Overland Park, Kansas.

Considered one of the most successful career technical programs in America, ProStart is sponsored by the Nevada Restaurant Association and the Nevada Association Educational Foundation. ProStart has helped boost Nevada’s status as one of the top culinary destination in the country and as a leader in restaurant growth.
