On Saturday afternoon, I was taken back about 50 years, to a time of war, a time when my father was brought to his knees trying to ensure that my brother didn’t end up in Viet Nam. He didn’t.
But in honor of all of those soldiers who weren’t so lucky, Carson Valley Community Theatre brought the war home, not to commercialize it, but to honor and give thanks to those who fought, and those who fell, and all of those who loved them.
“A Piece of My Heart” by Shirley Lauro, honors those heroes. CVCT brought many of the still living heroes to the stage and gave each a voice, a place to share their stories.
The audience was handed Kleenex before the show began and they were needed. We experienced the war through the eyes of five of the women and the men who experienced the war first hand. The naiveté, the tragedy, and the loneliness of returning home to a country that had deserted them.
This play pulls at your heart, the actors sob through their lines, the audience is silent, some remembering, some imagining, some reliving the days so long ago. The actors reach out to you, join you in remembering. Remembering is hard, easier to just move on, unless you were there, and then those memories are you.
