The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified a pedestrian who died in a May 14 collision involving a vehicle on US-50 near Silver Springs.

Juan Hernandez Mendez, 59, of Vallejo, Calif., died at the scene from injuries resulting from the collision, according NHP in a news release. Reported to troopers at approximately 11:35 p.m., the incident happened on US-50 near Rocky Road.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a Ford F-150 was traveling westbound on US-50 east of Rocky Road in the right travel lane. Pedestrian Juan Hernandez Mendez was standing along the unpaved right shoulder of US-50 just east of Rocky Road.

The Ford ran off the road and entered the right shoulder of US-50. The Ford struck a paddle marker, a light pole and pedestrian Juan Hernandez Mendez. The Ford continued and crossed Rocky Road striking a stop sign and coming to a stop on the west side of Rocky Road, according to NHP.

The driver, an adult male, reportedly sustained no injuries during the crash. Impairment is not suspected of being a factor in this crash.

The Nevada Highway Patrol Major Incident Reconstruction Team is investigating this crash.

The Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command has investigated 19 fatal crashes, resulting in 21 fatalities so far this year. The 2026 fatalities data is preliminary and may change or be updated based on final investigation and coroner reports, according to NHP.
