Some cats burst into a room like they own the place. Others quietly peek around the corner first, carefully deciding if the world is safe. Mimi is one of the gentle souls in the second category — and once she trusts you, she is absolutely worth the wait.

Mimi is a beautiful 3-year-old long-haired orange tabby with adorable white feet and an irresistibly sweet face. She came to Catmandu with her sister, Boo, after a very sheltered life. The two girls spent nearly their entire lives confined to a single bedroom. They were originally adopted by a young man who kept them in his room, but when he moved away, the cats were left behind with parents who were unfortunately very allergic to them. For the last nine months, Mimi and Boo had very little interaction or attention from people.  Now they are trying to figure out the much larger world of Catmandu — and for shy kitties, that can feel overwhelming.

Mimi is the braver sister and has already shown us what a loving cat she truly is. Though still timid and unsure, she enjoys affection, likes to play, and clearly wants to connect with people. She just needs someone patient and kind who understands that confidence takes time to grow. Sudden movements, loud voices, or aggressive animals frighten her, and she would not do well in a chaotic home with small or noisy children.

She seems accepting of other cats, though she is somewhat intimidated by them, and she has cautiously sniffed noses with the family dogs through a barrier. We think she could likely adjust to a calm, cat-friendly dog given a slow introduction.

Because Mimi and Boo have spent their whole lives together, we would certainly love to see them adopted as a pair if the right home comes along. They take comfort in each other’s presence and are used to navigating the world side by side. That said, they are not deeply bonded, and we believe each could also thrive separately in the right patient and loving home.

Mimi is looking for a peaceful home where she can continue learning that the world is not such a scary place after all. Watching a shy cat slowly blossom is one of the most rewarding experiences there is, and Mimi has all the makings of becoming an incredibly devoted companion for the person willing to give her the time she needs.

If you have a soft spot for tender-hearted underdogs, Mimi may be waiting just for you. Meet Mimi and her sister Boo this weekend at Catmandu, 1829 Brown Street. We are open Friday -Sunday from 11am to 4 pm. Please come early if you wish to adopt.
