I moved to Carson City three years ago, and at first, it seemed like there were no LGBTQ+ people here. I felt increasingly isolated.
I tried a couple of other groups; one ended up having a speaker who talked through the entire gathering. I get that when I watch the news — enough already.
On a whim, I went to a NV LGBTQ+ & Friends Social last March and it’s made all the difference in the world. To be honest, I was nervous, but as I walked into the room, all my anxiety melted away. What I liked the most was being able to talk or even just listen.
Launched in March of 2020, the first Social had 15 people. After COVID – in November of 2023 – the Socials became a quarterly event, and the most recent event had nearly 50 attendees. The private room at Red’s Old 395 Grill in Carson City is a fun, safe place to be, where everyone is welcome.
My first Social was a month before Easter last year. On every table, there were sequined disco bunnies, plastic eggs filled with candy, and so many Pride flags that it felt like I was in the middle of a parade.

Why NV LGBTQ+ & Friends Social Stands Out
A few things impressed me:
- The Socials are welcoming and pressure-free; they encourage real, unscripted conversations.
- The events attract an interesting mix of people; all ages, ethnicities, gender identities, and lifestyles.
- While there are some constants, each Social I’ve gone to has been different — different people, or different conversations.
- Mainly, be ready for some fun.
Being surrounded by other gay people and friends of our community was a game changer for me. I just ate lunch and hung out with people. The room was filled with laughter and conversation. I left with a few contacts, and some have become friends. Most importantly, I am not alone anymore.
Why You Might Consider Trying It
If you enjoy conversation, want to meet new people, or are simply looking for a positive way to spend a Saturday afternoon, the LGBTQ+ & Friends Social is worth exploring.
Tickets for the Social are $25/person covering food, standard beverages, tax, and tips. Tickets & info, go to www.nevadalgbtq.com.
There are free tickets for students as well for adults who could not otherwise afford to attend. Request free tickets via email: wnvlgbtq@gmail.com. First come, first served. Your privacy will be respected.
Side note: A central goal of the LGBTQ+ rights movement has always been to be accepted and recognized in the communities around us. There is a saying: “If you want a seat at the table, you can’t just serve yourself.”
In the past few years, the Social raised money for a mix of organizations. We are proud supporters of the Advocates to End Domestic Violence providing funds, dry goods, and food. We have contributed $4,000 to Nevada Pride. We supported a statewide food drive giving enough to provide over 6,500 meals for Nevadans in need from Ely to Las Vegas. We are good neighbors.
