Sheriff Kenny Furlong has announced his intention to file for re-election for Sheriff in the 2026 election cycle.
Mr. Furlong has held the Office of Sheriff since January 7, 2003, and is proud of the department’s men and women, as well as volunteers, in the fulfillment of the Mission and Goals that he has established.
Sheriff Furlong believes and promotes that the job is never finished, and his administration is continuously building and adjusting to new best practices and organizational excellence. The Sheriff, along with his executive staff and divisional managers, are proud of the accomplishments of the front-line employees of the department, and he looks forward to the future challenges that his administration will inevitably face.
The hallmark of Sheriff Furlong’s leadership rests in his prescribed goals, including professional growth from within the department, strong community ties, public awareness, and public participation. These driven characteristics of the administration are evident in all responses from the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Furlong is most proud of the department’s community engagement when challenged with public safety and city-wide events. Whether committing to a community festive calendar or responding to calls for service, it is the community needs and impact that come first.
During his present term of office, the department has been preparing for one of the largest public safety technology upgrades in well over 20 years. Set to “go live” in the summer of 2026, the departments personnel have been formatting the systems that will provide for enhanced public safety dispatching capabilities, modernizing patrol and investigations response platforms, streamlining custody and report management systems, and significantly improving real time criminal information technologies.
After researching and on-site visits to numerous agencies across the United States by staff persons and other impacted departments, the Carson City Board of Supervisors approved and funded the critically needed modernization project in 2025.
Sheriff Furlong intends on continuing a path that provides priority resources for school safety, traffic management, mental health outreach, proactive enforcement, and investigative efficiencies.
Whenever the opportunity arises that allows the Sheriff’s Office to be the cornerstone in the community, his administration strives to achieve the highest levels of organizational excellence in meeting the needs of the residents, businesses and families in Carson.
Realizing cooperation and engagement with other stakeholders is critical, Sheriff Furlong supports the needs of other citywide departments and regional law enforcement agencies.
By overlapping government resources and supporting vast responsibilities and priorities in the area, the greater needs of the community are achieved, often with reduced fiscal impact.
Today, Sheriff Furlong believes the regional law enforcement cooperation and engagement has reached an all-time high. This outreach recognizes that Carson City residents and businesses are often impacted by matters within and outside of our jurisdictional boundaries.
Furlong believes crime reduction often necessitates multi-jurisdictional responses to achieve the highest levels of public safety. Committed to this philosophy, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office meets and works with our regional law enforcement counterparts regularly to coordinate activities.
The Sheriff’s continued commitments go well beyond the desk of the office. Sheriff Furlong is heavily engaged in partnerships and non-profit organizations to benefit our families and community.
This broad-based leadership approach toward community engagement reflects in his involvement with organizations such as the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, the Rotary Club of Carson City, the Western Nevada Boys and Girls Club, Carson City Community Counseling Center, and the Capital City Circles program. With the Sheriff’s active involvement, each of these organizations strive daily to improve the quality of life for everyone in the community.
After over twenty years of commitment to the citizens of Carson City, Sheriff Kenny Furlong is proud to commit his public safety leadership and community engagement into the next election cycle.
