The Carson City School District is warning students, parents and families about a scamming app and website, “NIL Club,” that falsely claims to help high school athletes earn money through their athletic involvement. The district emphasizes that any communication from “NIL Club,” whether via app or text message, should be considered a scam.

The Athletics Department at Carson High School has learned that “NIL Club,” either through their app or through the nilclub.com website, is texting individuals, pretending to offer opportunities related to athletic involvement. The scam focuses on soliciting fundraiser support and NIL Club sign-ups, which have hidden, recurring subscription fees and charges.

NIL stands for NameImage and Likeness, and while NIL opportunities have become legitimate pathways for college athletes to earn income, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) have clear regulations prohibiting high school athletes from receiving any form of payment related to their athletic participation.

“While it is not our position to debate the merits of current college athletes earning money from their NIL, it should be understood that these changes do not affect current high school student-athletes. Current high school student-athletes CANNOT earn money as a result of their connection to their high school team.” Dr. Karissa L. Niehoff, NFHS executive director, wrote in a letter posted on the NIAA website.

The Carson City School District urges families to remain vigilant and report any suspicious messages to school officials. Students and parents should not provide any personal information, financial details or engage with these scam communications in any way.

For more information or to report suspicious activity, please contact the Carson High School Athletics Department or visit the official NIAA website for guidance on NIL rules for high school students.
