CARSON CITY — Next week is National Computer Science week, and all schools in the nation are being urged to do an “Hour of Code.” To help with the effort, State Superintendent Dr. Steve Canavero, Nevada Department of Education, joined students in Ms. Sherri Kelley’s AP Computer Science class at Carson High School on Friday morning, Dec. 1.

Dr. Canavero was accompanied by Superintendent Richard Stokes, Carson City School District, and Principal Tasha Fuson, Carson High School. Ms. Kelley and CHS Seniors Ryan Maxwell and Aidan Ward, helped teach computer coding to the three special guests.

The “Hour of Code” started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify “code,” to show that anybody can learn the basics and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.

This week-long observance is supported by more than 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide and is held annually in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906).
