The Carson High School (CHS) Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) sent a small team representing northern Nevada, Area 22, to the Navy’s National Orienteering Competition (NNOC) conducted at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Ala., March 16-17. The Carson High team placed eighth overall among 41 teams from around the globe.

The following cadets were on the team: Harrisha Ampo, Jazelyn Avila, Josef Estrada-Ledesma, Gideon Feuling, Neva Mellow, Vivi Mellow, Anna Shane, Jasmine Slater, Ronald Ward, Alexander Wells and Peter Woodbury.

These individual cadets placed in their respective categories: Junior Varsity Female: Cadet Anna Shane placed seventh overall (of 101 female cadets in JV), Junior Varsity Female: Cadet Vivi Mellow placed ninth overall, Junior Varsity Female: Cadet Harrisha Ampo placed 14th overall, Varsity Female: Cadet Jasmine Slater placed 15th overall (of 66 female cadets in Varsity), Varsity Male: Cadet Josef Estrada-Ledesma placed 17th overall (of 182 male cadets in Varsity).

More locally, the Carson High NJROTC Senator Battalion hosted a Washoe County School District sponsored Drill Meet and placed first overall among seven other school teams including those from Churchill County, Galena, Hug, McQueen, North Valleys, Reed and Spanish Springs.

Individual team events included the following: Unarmed Regulation and Exhibition Drill, Armed Regulation and Exhibition Drill, Color Guard, First Year Squad Drill (freshman only), Academics, Dual Unarmed and Dual Armed Exhibition, Solo Armed Exhibition and a Team Inspection.

Carson HS NJROTC placed first in Unarmed Regulation Drill led by Cadet Dennis Dzwir, Unarmed Exhibition Drill led by Cadet Bailey Reed, Team Inspection led by first year Cadet Samantha Alcala-Garcia, Academics led by Cadet Olivia Croft, Dual Unarmed Exhibition Cadet Aribella Kane and Cadet Emily Suitt-Payne, Dual Armed Exhibition Cadet Dennis Dzwir and Cadet Devin Linehan, Solo Armed Exhibition Cadet Devin Linehan. They also placed second in the following events: Armed Exhibition Drill led by Cadet Roman Gonzales and First Year Squad Drill led by first year Cadet Marssy Herrera.

This was the first drill meet of the season, for the WCSD Drill Meet season. The next meet will be at Spanish Springs HS on April 5th.

The NJROTC program aims to teach high school students the values of citizenship, leadership, character and community service while also providing a foundation for future careers in the military or other fields. The program is offered in more than 600 high schools across the United States, and the NJROTC Area Managers visit each unit once a year to conduct inspections.
