As Washoe County School District announced Tuesday that five of their schools are on outbreak status for respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses, Carson City School District says none of its schools are on the outbreak status.
Sheila Story, chief nurse for Carson City School District, said the district works with Carson City Health and Human Services to track illness trends and follows their guidance in case of potential outbreaks.
If absentee rates due to illness reach 10 percent, the district promptly notifies CCHHS and implements recommended mitigation strategies, said Story.
The threshold of 10 percent absentee rate, depending on the illness, isn’t being experienced in any of Carson City’s nine schools at this time.
The Carson City School District is closely monitoring any increase in respiratory and gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses but is currently not on any outbreak status.
The district remains vigilant, with nurses stationed at each school to assess student health, educate families and staff, refer families to other medical professionals if needed and promote preventive measures such as proper hand washing to reduce the spread of germs, Story explained.
The district continues to monitor illness levels and encourages students, staff and families to practice good hygiene to maintain a healthy school environment.
The district is promoting proper hand washing and providing hand sanitizer stations throughout the schools to encourage good hygiene practices. Schools also provide ongoing education to students, staff and families about the importance of respiratory illness prevention, symptoms to watch for and steps to take if someone becomes ill.
The Washoe County School District reported Tuesday that five of its schools are on outbreak status, one for respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses, two for respiratory illness and two for gastrointestinal illness. At this time, WCSD hasn’t said which schools are affected.
