Last week, a discussion began circulating on social media after a student received a message from a teacher stating that, beginning this year, families will need to begin paying for summer school.

Concerns arose over this new proposed policy, with questions surrounding how much it would cost, who would need to pay, and more.

According to Dan Davis, Public Information Officer for the Carson City School District, questions surrounding summer school fees are still very preliminary, and planning for what those fees will be — should they need to occur at all — won’t begin until February 2025.

“Previous grant funding that helped subsidize summer school costs will be sunsetting in 2025,” Davis said. “The district plans to revert back to affixing fees for students to recover credits in the summer of 2025, a practice that was in place prior to 2021.”

In 2020, the cost of summer school was $150 per half credit. There was also a reduced rate for students on free and reduced lunch, or those experiencing qualifying economic hardships.

“Nothing will be finalized until February, but it is always in the best interest of students to do their best and earn a passing grade in all their classes each semester,” Davis added.

We will update on summer school fees as information becomes available.
