A man walking eastbound on Highway 50 near the top of Spooner Summit was struck by a vehicle and flown by air ambulance to a Reno hospital early Friday morning, according to a Nevada Highway Patrol sergeant.

The victim’s condition is unknown at this time. The adult male driver who is suspected of hitting the pedestrian with his vehicle was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, said NHP Sgt. Rob Rikalo.

The incident happened at around 3:30 a.m. east of Spooner Summit near the Douglas County, Carson City line. NHP is also investigating whether the pedestrian was intoxicated.

The driver was distraught when officers arrived, said Rikalo. The vehicle’s front end was damaged and the windshield smashed. A person who came upon the scene called 911 and rendered aid to the victim prior to fire department personnel arriving on the scene.

The victim was taken by ground ambulance to the bottom of Spooner Summit at the Carson City park and ride off of Highway 50 and flown by Calstar to Renown Medical Center.
