"Never Escape the Fruitcake" will be presented by local historians David and Gayle Woodruff.

With less than a month until Christmas, the Carson City Senior Center will offer up the perfect holiday sides through December with holiday crafts, music performances, a trip to Reno for The Nutcracker, a digital skills workshop and a history talk about the sometimes re-gifted and often mysterious holiday fruitcake.

Here’s a look at what’s ahead:

Special Musical Performance hosted at the Carson City Senior Center

Join us for a special musical performance just in time for the Holidays on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 1:30 p.m., in the Nevada Room at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. In-Tune Tales stars longtime local-favorite radio talent and musician Scot Marshall alongside Graham Marshall and Ron Savage. In addition to jazz, pop, and bluegrass arrangements of several classic holiday songs, the centerpiece is the Dr. Seuss classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” told in its entirety through spoken word, song, and sound effects. Free digital skills training workshops

Join us and learn basic mobile device skills, email, computer navigation, or brush up on your internet safety on Dec. 16, 17, 18, 1 to 4 p.m. Bring a friend or family member. The workshops are FREE, open to everyone, and held at the at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, Computer Lab (east end). Please register at Reception by calling (775) 883-0703.

History Program: You’ll Never Escape the Fruitcake

This holiday season, join local historians David & Gayle Woodruff for a unique and entertaining holiday history program, You’ll Never Escape the Fruitcake — a jolly romp through the tangled tinsel of Christmas traditions on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 1:30 p.m. in the Nevada Room (west end) at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive.

From the noble origins of Christmas trees to the mysterious persistence of fruitcake (which scientists now believe may be immortal), local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff unwrap the weird, the wonderful, and the wildly nostalgic in a 55-minute living history presentation. It’s history with a side of ho-ho-hilarity — bring your cheer, your curiosity, and your own favorite memories of the holiday season. Free Event. RSVP not necessary. 

Holiday Craft Sale at Hidden Treasures Gift Shop

Just in time for Christmas, shop the special Holiday Craft Sale, which will include special handmade items brought just for the event. Buy one-of-a-kind gifts for Christmas! Sale dates are Thursday, Dec. 4 and Friday, Dec. 5, 9 to 4 p.m., Saturday, December 6, 12 to 4 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive in the lobby and Gift Shop.

Free Christmas Show Raising Money for Meals on Wheels

Be dazzled and entertained with holiday music, skits, dancing, clogging, performances, and festive fun on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. This free event will have raffle tickets available for sale and all proceeds go towards Meals on Wheels. Free event. Just show up. 

Senior Bus Trip to See The Nutcracker 

The Carson City Senior Center is offering a chartered bus trip to the Pioneer Center in Reno to watch The Nutcracker matinee on Saturday, Dec. 20. Admission and transportation provided by SB118 from the 84th Legislative Session. Bring money for concessions and driver tip (optional). Limited seats available. Sign up at Reception (775) 883-0703.

Glade Myler Book Talk 

Join poet and author, Glade Myler, for a talk about his new book “From the Sands of Time” on Friday, Dec. 5 at 12:30 pm in the Joshua Room (east end) at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. Free event and RSVP is not necessary.

Dance & Potluck 

Dance the night away with live music with Don and Nadine from 6-9pm on the 1st Saturday of each month at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. Admission is $10 per person and guests are asked to bring a dish to share. Dances are open to all ages. 

Donuts & Decisions 

Please join us for donuts and an advanced funeral planning seminar aimed to increase peace of mind on Friday, Dec. 5, 10 am in the Joshua Room (east end) at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. We will discuss the steps involved in getting a funeral plan in place, how that plan will affect your loved ones, and answer your questions about funeral services.
