A rumor was circulating this week that Tahoe Forest Products — Carson City’s lumber mill that operates behind Topsy Lane on Washoe Tribal Land — was shutting down.

A reader reached out to us asking whether or not the mill had declared bankruptcy and was closing its doors.

However, TFP said that’s not the case.

A spokesperson on Wednesday told Carson Now that the mill is overseen by a board of investors, and there are “always new investors coming in.” They said that there has been no issues or declaration of bankruptcy.

The spokesperson said a reason for the questions is likely due to the fact that they are in the process of “retooling and upgrading” their operations and machinery, and that while they have contracts throughout the forests, they are in a slow season right now.

However, the mill hasn’t been without its controversies; being on tribal land, residents could not appeal the tribe’s decision to allow the mill to open up shop nearby. Complaints began flooding in regarding noise and bright lights at all hours of operations, which TFP said they would address.

Tahoe Forest Products’ model is intended to increase forest health by removing burned trees from forest fires and milling them into lumber.
