Joe McCarthy, director of the Carson City Office of Business Development and a key player in city’s redevelopment efforts, will be “transitioning out” of his job by June 30, according to City Manager Larry Werner.
McCarthy has been on leave for the past two weeks, following a disagreement over the presentation of a redevelopment project at Southgate Center to the Board of Supervisors.
Werner said that while they like each other personally, there is a difference in styles between the two that caused problems.
“As an engineer, I like things more locked down, while Joe is more free-wheeling,” Werner said.
Werner said the two met today, and that McCarthy told him he wanted some time to take his career in a new direction.
McCarthy said he was very happy with his nine years working for the city, and was looking forward to new opportunities.
“If you drive down Carson Street, you can see the great things we have accomplished,” McCarthy said. “There are gleaming new car dealerships, new national retailers moving in and a growing downtown. I’m very proud of what we accomplished during my time.”
McCarthy was formerly executive director of the Brewery Arts Center.
