A 56-year-old man was arrested Monday for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and hit and run causing property damage to an unoccupied vehicle, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office report.
According to the report, a deputy responded to a hit and run of an unoccupied vehicle in the 3900 block of South Carson Street. The officer arrived and observed a damaged vehicle parked on the south side parking lot.
The vehicle had damage to the passenger side rear door and the vehicle had been moved sideways in the parking space. The vehicle was unoccupied. The officer located the registered owner who did not observe the incident.
While speaking with the vehicle owner a customer advised they witnessed the incident and took down the license plate number of the suspect vehicle. The deputy ran a registration check on the vehicle and it returned to the man who was later determined to be the suspect driver.
The suspect vehicle was located and the man, who was the registered owner, was attempting to wipe the paint off of the suspect vehicle, the report states. Deputies observed the plates matched the plate numbers provided by the witness, the report states.
A deputy spoke with the suspect and could smell a slight odor of alcohol coming from his breath as he spoke. The man had red, bloodshot eyes. He was asked if he had consumed alcohol since returning to his home. He stated he did not. He was asked to describe what happened.
The man stated he went through a food drive thru lane, ordered food at the window, paid for the food, received his drinks and was asked to pull around and wait for the food. The man said when he pulled around the building he was focused on the parking spots next to the building and he did not see the victim’s vehicle until it was too late. He said he struck the vehicle, panicked and left the restaurant without getting his food. He stated he then drove home, according to the report.
The man was asked if he would participate in field sobriety tests and he agreed. He showed signs of impairment on the tests and provided a preliminary breath test of .143. He was arrested for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and hit and run property damage of an unoccupied vehicle. At jail he provided two evidentiary breath samples with results of .088 and .086. Bail: $1,774.
