A former Carson City educator is turning a deeply personal journey into an opportunity to support families throughout Northern Nevada.
Alyssa Herrera, formerly known to many Carson City families as Ms. Bianchi during her eight years teaching at Fremont Elementary School, will host Family Fun Day: Small Steps. Big Impact. on Sunday, June 28, at Cyan Park in Reno.
The free community event was inspired by Herrera’s twin toddlers, Mack and Mila, who were diagnosed with an ultra-rare neuromuscular disorder. What began as a family’s effort to navigate therapies, medical appointments, and an uncertain future has evolved into a mission centered on awareness, inclusion, and expanding opportunities for children with disabilities.
After leaving the classroom to become her twins’ full-time caregiver, Herrera dedicated herself to advocating for children and families facing similar challenges. She has since written children’s books, developed family resources, and launched initiatives aimed at increasing support and accessibility for children with disabilities across Northern Nevada.
This year’s Family Fun Day is being held in partnership with Radiant Child Therapy and will raise funds for three therapy scholarships for local children. The scholarships are intended to help families access intensive therapy services that can be life-changing but are often financially out of reach.
The event will feature family-friendly activities, community resource organizations, face painting, bubbles, a photo area, and opportunities for attendees to nominate a child for a therapy scholarship. Organizers hope the event will not only raise funds but also foster connection, awareness, and support among families throughout the region.
Many Carson City families will remember Herrera from her years in the classroom, making the event a meaningful example of a local educator continuing to impact children’s lives beyond the school setting.
