Low pressure moving across the Pacific Northwest will push a cold front across the eastern Sierra and western Nevada today prompting a Red Flag Warning and a Wind Advisory for the Carson City area.
Winds will increase this morning and continue through the afternoon, and slowly diminish by evening, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Winds will be from the south to southwest, 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. Locally stronger gusts up to 65 mph is expected in wind prone areas.
Hazardous travel conditions are possible for high profile vehicles on Highway 395 and Interstate 580. Travel restrictions are likely. Travelers should also be prepared for blowing dust as the winds increase. Low humidity along with the strong winds will produce critical fire weather conditions along the Sierra Front and east into the basin and range, so extra precautions should be taken to properly dispose of ashes and to avoid making sparks that could result in a fire ignition.
If you have outdoor decorations, bring them indoors, secure the lawn chairs and bring in the small dogs.
The Wind Advisory is in effect through 11 p.m. tonight. The Red Flag Warning runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Humidity is expected to be low, 13 to 22 percent, making for critical fire weather conditions.
