Make-A-Wish® Nevada and the Associated General Contractors of Nevada turned a Northern Nevada’s home schooled seventh grader’s dream of having a space of her own into reality when Makenzie Sousa was surprised with her very own “backyard clubhouse” – a creative retreat designed around her love of art, music, gaming and spending time with friends.

Diagnosed with cancer in 2025, Sousa undergoes weekly chemotherapy and regular imaging as part of her ongoing treatment. She envisioned a cozy, personalized space where she could paint murals on the walls, display her artwork and crafts, practice her instruments, play video games and host sleepovers with friends. While the space might traditionally be called a she-shed, Sousa prefers the name “clubhouse” – a place entirely her own where creativity and imagination takes center stage.

At home, Sousa shares a bedroom with her sister, making the dream of a dedicated personal space especially meaningful. Her new clubhouse gives her room to recharge when she wants quiet time, experiment with creative projects and make memories with friends.

Creative and outgoing, Sousa played an important role in bringing her vision to life, imagining the details that would make it uniquely hers. From choosing her favorite shade of blue to creating a space for art and music – every element reflects her personality and creative spirit.

The wish was made possible through the generosity of the Associated General Contractors of Nevada whose support helped transform Sousa’s dream into a reality.

“Every wish is an opportunity to give a child something to look forward to during an incredibly challenging time,” said Scott Rosenzweig, CEO of Make-A-Wish Nevada. “Makenzie’s backyard clubhouse is a place where she can let her imagination run free, enjoy being a kid and create special moments with family and friends. We are grateful to all who helped bring her vision to life.”
