The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will be publishing monthly alerts on scam trends and the amount of dollars lost. During the month of September, CCSO received 20 fraud reports, including one significant case involving approximately $145,000 in fraudulent withdrawals from an elderly resident’s bank account.
A recurring trend involved scammers impersonating financial institutions, law enforcement, and service providers to pressure victims into sending money through bank transfers, gift cards, or Bitcoin. Other common fraud reports included unauthorized credit card transactions, compromised accounts, and suspected card skimming.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to remain vigilant against potential scams and to never provide personal or financial information to UNSOLICITED CALLERS. Residents are encouraged to verify suspicious requests directly with the organization involved and remember that legitimate agencies will NOT demand immediate payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers.
Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of fraud is encouraged to contact the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at (775) 887-2020, Carson City Dispatch non-emergency (775) 887-2008, or Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900.
