One hundred fifteen Carson High School seniors visited the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), for Nevada Bound, a full-day campus tour designed to introduce prospective students to the university’s academic programs, resources and campus life.

The students, identified as Tier 1 through the transcript project agreement between the Carson City School District and UNR, began the day exploring informational tables focused on financial aid, housing and the university’s colleges.

Students then divided into groups based on their college of choice for campus tours, where they had opportunities to meet current students and faculty and learn more about their intended fields of study. The visit also included lunch in the university’s dining commons, giving students a chance to experience campus life firsthand.

The visit was made possible through the Transcript Project partnership between the University of Nevada and Carson High School. There has been an upward trend in both applications and enrollment at the University by CHS students.

With the project, UNR reviews the transcripts of rising CHS Seniors and categorizes them by their readiness for college based on course completion and GPA. Tier 1 students are admissible to UNR immediately, Tier 2 students may become admissible after a successful first semester of Senior year and Tier 3 students are encouraged to complete a year at a Nevada community college before transferring.

This partnership has allowed Carson High counselors the ability to more quickly connect students to the right pathway. This year, CHS saw Tier 1 students increase from 128 to 188. The goal is to support students throughout the college application process and encourage Nevada’s brightest graduates to pursue their education and careers in the Silver State.

“Experiences like Nevada Bound help our students see themselves in college and understand the opportunities available to them after graduation,” said Principal Cheryl Macy. “We appreciate UNR’s continued partnership and commitment to supporting our students throughout the college application process, as well as our schoolcounselors for helping make these opportunities possible.”

Students left the event with university merchandise and a better understanding of the opportunities available to them as they consider their futures. Additionally, as part of the partnership agreement, the university covers the cost of charter buses for the trip and provides continued support to students throughout the college application process.
