A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Carson City and across Western Nevada as strong winds are expected Tuesday afternoon and evening ahead of a cold front, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Wind gusts in the valleys are expected to be 45-55 mph with gusts to 65 mph in wind prone areas while the Sierra ridges could gust to 100 mph.
Advisories have been issued for northeast California, the Sierra, and northwest Nevada. Potential impacts from this wind event include strong cross winds with travel restrictions possible for high profile vehicles. The Red Flag Warning runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and includes the Western Nevada front, the West Central Nevada Basin and Range, including mineral and Southern Lyon counties.
Low visibility due to blowing dust will also be possible across western Nevada along with fire weather concerns as the winds combine with low afternoon humidity, which is expected to be between 10 and 20 percent, according to the weather service.
Dangerous boating conditions are likely across Pyramid Lake and Lake Tahoe while aviation concerns include turbulence and some wind shear due to mountain wave effects. Be sure to bring in the small dogs and secure outdoor fall and Halloween decorations. Strong winds may persist into Wednesday morning.
Temperatures associated with the system will become colder late Tuesday night into Wednesday with a chance for light rain and high mountain snow. Dry conditions and mild temperatures are expected to return from Thursday into the weekend, according to the weather service.
