The 36th annual World Championship Outhouse Races returns to Virginia City this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 4-5, as decorated outhouses on wheels and teams of racers barrel down historic C Street. Visitors each day can come watch the excitement as competitors vie for the title of “Fastest Outhouse in the West.”

Saturday’s parade begins at 12 p.m. Races follow from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The parade launches a series of head-to-head races, where teams of three push and pull their decorated “rolling thrones” down historic C Street. What began as a tongue-in-cheek protest decades ago is now one of Nevada’s most iconic small-town traditions. For a full schedule of events, see visitvirginiacitynv.com.

This free-to-attend event will also feature live music, food vendors and plenty of lighthearted loo-inspired fun. For more information about the World Championship Outhouse Race or to become a participating racer, visit visitvirginiacitynv.com.

”The Outhouse Races embody Virginia City’s quirky personality and community spirit,” said Todd Tuttle, tourism director for Virginia City. “What began decades ago as a cheeky protest has become one of Nevada’s most iconic traditions, drawing thousands of visitors each year. It’s the kind of event that captures both our sense of humor and our deep connection to history. We invite families, friends and fans who enjoy a good laugh to line C Street, cheer on the racers and spend the weekend exploring everything our town has to offer, from historic saloons and shops to museums and attractions that bring our past to life.”

The origin of the event dates back to a local protest against the removal of outdoor restrooms. Residents staged their opposition in true Virginia City fashion by racing their outhouses down the main street. That spontaneous act has grown into a signature two-day event filled with outrageous racing and a bit of Nevada humor. On Saturday, the festivities kick-off with a parade of competing teams and their outhouses followed by the qualifying races. On Sunday, the final racers compete for a chance to win the “Fastest Outhousein the West” title at the closing ceremony. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early for parking and prime viewing spots, as this has become one of Virginia City’s most popular annual events.
