Two earthquakes happened Friday near the South Lake Tahoe area, with magnitudes of 3.7 and later 2.9, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
USGS reported an early Friday morning earthquake centered near South Lake Tahoe at around 3 a.m., prompting many South Shore residents to post on social media that they were jolted awake and felt (and heard) the earthquake.
USGS reports the 3.71 earthquake happened at Stanford Camp on the west side of Fallen Leaf Lake, 10 miles from South Lake Tahoe and was 7 km deep. The seismological lab at the University of Nevada, Reno reports the quake was 3.60.

Later Friday, just before midnight, USGS reported a second earthquake. It was located in the same area as the Friday morning 3.7 earthquake, 10 kilometers to the WSW of South Lake Tahoe (or 6.2 miles), putting it at Fallen Leaf Lake.
USGS reports the second one was 2.9 magnitude.
