The Reno District Council, Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP), a nonprofit organization that helps those living in poverty, will hold their 2025 Friends of the Poor Walk/Run on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025, to benefit those struggling with poverty in Carson City and Washoe counties.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m. on the Bishop Manogue Catholic High School running track in south Reno.

All proceeds and donations from the event will directly benefit neighbors in need in the Carson City, Reno, Sparks and Washoe County areas served by SVdP. Anyone interested in learning more, participating, or making a pledge can visit https://99pledges.com/fund/fopwalk. Walkers need only to walk ¼ mile.

Proceeds from this walk-a-thon will be used to prevent evictions, pay past due utility bills and provide support services to homeless individuals. The Reno District Council, SVdP currently operates in Carson City, Incline Village and Reno, and we are looking to expand across Washoe County and northern Nevada.

We already have 100 walkers registered, and we have received donations totaling 40% of our $10,000 goal. This is a family-friendly event and strollers, walkers and wheelchairs are welcome. Sorry no animals. You can make a business donation/sponsorship by contacting edchoklek@gmail.com.

SVdP offers a variety of programs and services, including housing and utility assistance, disaster relief, education and mentoring, food pantries, dining halls, clothing, assistance with transportation, and prescription medication. Over the past year, SVdP provided over $1.7 billion in aid to those in need and helped more than 5 million people.
