Dogs of all sizes, ages and abilities dived, leapt and even waddled their way into the outdoor pool Saturday at Carson Aquatic Facility for the 11th annual Pooch Plunge, a benefit for Carson Animal Services Initiative, also known as CASI.

This popular local day for the dogs and their owners is an end-of-summer last splash at the city pool, which will be drained and winterized after Saturday’s event.

Dog owners paid $10 for their first dog and $7 for each additional dog to watch them dive after after tennis balls, paddle and float around and then after help getting out, shake out their fur, with many returning to the pool again.

The event continues Saturday until 3 p.m.

“It is a super affordable, user-friendly fun day that benefits our ‘critter-fixer program.’ This is our low-cost spay/neuter voucher program for pets who live in low-income families,” said Lisa Schuette, chair and founder of CASI and a member of the Carson City Board of Supervisors.

“As of today we have helped spay or neuter more than 1,600 animals, which directly impacts surrenders to the shelter. We are doing our part and we are so appreciative of the community’s participation.”

CASI was founded in 2012 to help raise funds to build a much needed new animal shelter in Carson City. With support from Carson City and community volunteers, the shelter on Airport Road opened its doors in the fall 2016.

Since then, CASI has been helping to equip the shelter, donating a custom built animal control vehicle and fencing as well as installing a joyful dog play yard on the west side of the shelter.

It is also now helping to make available spay/neuter services to pets whose families cannot otherwise afford this important service.

CASI hosts the Pooch Plunge as well as Pictures with Santa and Bark Whine & Dine dinner auction, all annual fundraising events.
