This week, the Senior Spotlight is Carson High School’s Larkin Russell. Larkin has committed to continuing her academic and athletic journey at the University of Vermont next fall, where she will compete on the swim team and pursue a degree in Animal Science with the goal of becoming a veterinarian.
Larkin is an exceptional student who has earned a 4.0 unweighted GPA and a 4.9 weighted GPA while taking on a rigorous course load that includes eight Advanced Placement classes throughout her high school career. Her academic excellence has been matched by her leadership and service.

In 10th grade, she served as the Event Coordinator for National Honor Society. In 11th grade, she was elected Treasurer of the National Honor Society, and this year, her senior year, she has been chosen by her advisors to be President of National Honor Society. Her dedication has also been recognized through her selection to the Athletic Academic Honor Roll and the All-Regional Academic Team.
Beyond academics, Larkin has been an influential leader and mentor in athletics. As a league swim coach for the Carson Tigersharks Swim Team, not only has she taught children ages 6–12 all four competitive strokes—freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, she is also a year round-member of the Tigersharks, for the past 12 years.

In those 12 years she has swam at championship swim meets, such as Nevada State Championships, Junior Olympics, Far Westerns and Sectionals. These are all meets that a swimmer needs to make a time standard in order to compete. Once she got to high school she was able to join the Carson High Swimming Team. She has made regionals and state the last three years. Last year she was a Northern Nevada regional champion in the 100 and 200 freestyles. She is hoping for a repeat this coming swim season.
Her passion for animals and her future career as a veterinarian are reflected in her volunteer work at Lone Mountain Veterinary Clinic, where she has gained valuable hands-on experience. Her responsibilities have included restocking surgical equipment, preparing rooms after patient visits, assisting with animal transport and shadowing veterinarians during surgeries. These experiences have deepened her knowledge and strengthened her commitment to a career in veterinary medicine.
Larkin Russell exemplifies academic excellence, athletic dedication and community leadership. Her determination, compassion and drive will undoubtedly lead to continued success as she begins her next chapter at the University of Vermont.
