Portions of the Friends in Service Helping (FISH) complex in Carson City received a free a paint job and freshen-up Wednesday from local real estate agent volunteers as part of a nationwide effort called Realtor Give Back Week happening Sept. 8-12.

Coordinated through Sierra Nevada Realtors and individual county directors, work projects like the one in Carson City are also happening in Douglas, Lyon, Storey, Washoe and Churchill counties.

According to Adrienne Phenix, Carson City Board Director for the Sierra Nevada Realtors, local county groups reached out to their communities to see which community organizations needed help.

In Carson City, the group reached out to Jim Peckham, Executive Director of FISH, who said the organization was in dire need to have buildings painted, refreshened and weeds picked up.

“FISH provided the paint and then us, as agents, we brought our own brushes, rollers and also brought coats for their winter drive in order to give people in need warm jackets and accessories,” she said. “FISH does a lot for our community. They provide a lot of meals and housing. They are a great service for people in Carson City and people in need.”

FISH Director Jim Peckham said he was delighted to have the help of volunteers for the effort.

“The realtors contacted us and said they were looking for a project. I said ‘by golly, we’ve got plenty!’ Fortunately the community is very supportive of us. As most know we don’t rely on tax dollars but we rely on the generosity of the community. And that includes 400-plus volunteers every year. They are the part of the volunteer core who keep everything up-to-date and make it easy for us to provide services to our clients.”

In work and materials, Wednesday’s job would likely run at around $10,000, said local Realtor Garrett Lepire, who, along with the dozen or so Carson City volunteers, worked his paint brushes across the buildings under the late summer sun.

“FISH is a great organization because of what they do for the community,” said Carson City Real Estate Agent Ashley Canfield, who also volunteered her painting skills Wednesday. “Sierra Nevada Realtors organized this as a way for realtors to give back to the community and show our support for what FISH does. And it’s a beautiful day.”
