Gusty winds and low humidity will arrive in the Carson City and Sierra region Tuesday along with a cooling weather pattern, which has prompted the National Service to issue a fire weather watches and warnings.

Beginning Tuesday afternoon, humidity will range 7 to 17 percent with winds coming from the southwest 15 to 25 mph and gusts 35 to 40 mph. Localized gusts up to 50 mph are possible for wind prone locations. Strongest winds will be mainly during the afternoon and evening hours Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the weather service.

As for active winds, the duration will be 4 to 9 hours each afternoon for the valley locations and longer durations possible for upper slopes and ridges, according to the weather service.

The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fires to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them. The weather service advises people should avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.

The Fire Weather Watch, which will likely turn into a Red Flag Warning later Monday, is for regions of the Western Nevada Sierra Front including Carson City, Reno, Sparks, Carson Valley, West Central Nevada Basin and Range-Northern Washoe County as well as Mineral and southern Lyon counties.

For Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton and Silver Springs areas, the cool down begins Tuesday, with daytime highs in the low 80s. Wednesday through Friday will see daytime highs in the mid 70s. Night time lows will be in the upper 30s to 40s.
