Following the three-day Labor Day weekend, we enter our second week of Nevada state systems being offline due to a cyberattack, with very little in information coming from state officials.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has issued no new public releases or held additional press conferences since August 27 when the first of two press conferences was held in Carson City; the second occurred August 28 in Las Vegas.
Instead, the Office of Emergency Management has established a recovery homepage which is being routinely updated as services come back online.
However, no information has been updated since the page was established as to whether or not personal information of Nevada residents was stolen.
Instead, the same message remains: A forensic review confirms that some data was exfiltrated (moved outside the state network). Investigators are determining scope. If personal information is confirmed, the State will notify affected individuals consistent with Nevada law (see NRS 603A.040 and NRS 603A.220).
Constituents have been critical of Lombardo’s lack of communication with the public, which he addressed during the second press conference in Las Vegas.
As we enter the second week without any confirmation from the governor on what data was leaked, Nevadans on social media are becoming more and more frustrated. Some have reported receiving “spam bombing” to emails and phone numbers, while others have said they’ve seen suspicious changes to their credit inquiries.
However, at this time there’s been no proof that this relates to the state breach versus run-of-the-mill spammer issues. Similarly, some state workers have complained of payroll issues, but it appears the majority of employees received their pay uninterrupted as planned.
Speculation at press conferences and on social media has questioned whether or not the attack was brought on by a Las Vegas cyber security / hacker conference; if the state failed to update their security systems; or if system audits were completed.
However, during the second press conference in Las Vegas, Lombardo said that speculation isn’t helpful, and investigations are ongoing.
It also has not been revealed what hackers are asking for in ransom, and if the state intends to pay it — or rebuild their systems from scratch.
