Thursday evening is the main event. The Moon rises east-southeast over Carson City at about 7:29 p.m. already entering Earth’s shadow, with the partial eclipse beginning around 7:33 p.m. Maximum eclipse comes at 9:12 p.m., when roughly 93 percent of the Moon’s diameter will be inside Earth’s dark central shadow. The Full Moon itself occurs only a few minutes later. The partial phase ends around 10:51 p.m., with the faint penumbral stage lingering until just after midnight. Unlike a solar eclipse, this one is completely safe to watch with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope. An open eastern horizon will be especially useful at moonrise.

Venus remains the easiest planet to spot in the evening, shining low and bright in the west after sunset. Saturn is becoming an increasingly convenient target later at night as it rises in the east and remains visible through the early morning hours. Mars is best seen before sunrise, while Jupiter is also emerging low in the eastern morning sky. Mercury may be astrologically important this week, but it is not a good observing target: its close proximity to the Sun makes it extremely difficult to see.

The nearly full Moon will wash out much of the faint sky this week, so this is not the time to plan a serious Milky Way expedition. A few late Perseids may still appear early in the week, but moonlight will hide most of them. Instead, make Thursday’s eclipse the outing. Find a clear view east of Carson City, watch the Moon climb out of the basin already darkened by Earth’s shadow, and stay long enough to see the bright edge slowly return. It is one of those rare weeks when the most interesting thing in the horoscope is also the easiest thing to walk outside and see.
