Joseph Rodriguez has been appointed by Director George Togliatti as the new State Fire Marshal with the Nevada Department of Public Safety, State Police, effective Sept. 13, 2025.
Rodriguez will succeed current State Fire Marshal Mike Dzyak, who will retire on Sept. 12, 2025, following an exemplary 25-year career with the State of Nevada. Rodriguez and Dzyak will work closely over the coming weeks to ensure a well-coordinated and successful transition.
Joseph Rodriguez brings a distinguished background in firefighting, military service and law enforcement. A longtime Nevadan, he began his public safety career at age 18 as a firefighter with the Bureau of Land Management, battling wildfires across Nevada and the Western United States.
He also served as a volunteer firefighter in North Washoe County. He went on to serve more than 11 years in the Nevada National Guard. His military career, which included multiple activations and deployments to Afghanistan and Haiti, overlapped with the start of his law enforcement career in 2006.
Rodriguez joined the Nevada DPS State Fire Marshal Division in 2016 and has held several leadership roles, including Investigator, Bureau Chief and Assistant State Fire Marshal. He holds degrees in criminal justice and fire science.
“Joseph Rodriguez brings a well-rounded background to this role,” said Nevada Department of Public Safety Director George Togliatti. “His experience across firefighting, military service and law enforcement gives him a unique perspective and a strong foundation to lead the division forward. We’re proud to have him serve in this capacity.”
“I’m deeply honored to serve as Nevada’s State Fire Marshal,” Rodriguez said. “I want to thank Director Togliatti and the Department’s leadership for their trust and support. It’s a privilege to lead a division so committed to fire prevention, life safety and public service in communities across our state.”
The Nevada State Fire Marshal Division is a division of the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Nevada State Police.
