Visitors and residents of Carson City were treated Thursday morning to patriotic music and a public reading of the Declaration of Independence by the Sons of the American Revolution, Battle Born Patriots Chapter, at the Nevada State Museum.

SAR members, dressed in period Continental Army uniforms, played songs like “Yankee Doodle,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” and more using just military fife and drum instruments.

A public reading of the Declaration of Independence followed, along with the ringing of the replica Liberty Bell in the garden plaza facing N. Carson Street just outside the museum’s Dema Guinn wing.

Moments prior to the Liberty Bell ringing, the chimes atop the historic Laxalt Building played “America the Beautiful” after the stroke of 10 a.m. Thursday.

The Liberty Bell was rung 13 times, once for each of the original 13 colonies. Members of the audience called out the names of each colony as the bell was struck.

Several people — men, women and children — then lined up to ring the bell themselves, announcing what state they were from.

More events around the area are scheduled throughout Independence Day, culminating with the annual fireworks display at Mills Park Thursday night.
