Lyon County officials are assessing the damage from Tuesday night’s storms that brought heavy rain and caused significant flash flooding to the Dayton and Six Mile Canyon area.
Meanwhile, today’s Flash Flood Watch will likely turn into a Flash Flood Warning by the National Weather Service in the event of heavy rain as remnant moisture from Tropical Storm Blanca will phase with a potent trough bringing the potential for widespread rain and localized flash flooding to the region.
The tropical nature of the air mass and slow moving storms will lead to efficient rainfall production. A few thunderstorms may be possible as well increasing the flash flood potential. Near burn scars from previous wildfires and steep terrain, heavy rain may cause flooding and debris flows.
Areas that have already received heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours such as the Six Mile Canyon area near Dayton are particularly susceptible to flash flooding today if additional heavy rainfall occurs.
At this time, we have heard that Six Mile Canyon is open. Damage assessments around Dayton are anywhere from standing water in streets to water and flooding inside homes.
Meanwhile, a swath of moderate rainfall is stretched along the I-80 corridor this morning. Slick roadways and reduced visibility is expected for this morning’s commute. Expect areas of heavy rainfall to develop this afternoon. Areas particularly susceptible to flash flooding include steep terrain, recent burn scars, and locations that have already seen heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours.
