Marines and sailors from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Pendelton, Calif., are scheduled to conduct training in areas surrounding Minden-Tahoe Airport beginning Friday and running through June 24.
The unit will fly personnel and equipment in Marine aircraft to conduct training exercises in the adjacent areas. To ensure the training is realistic, some flights will occur after dark, increasing local air traffic.
The Marines will utilize Minden-Tahoe Airport facilities to host a Supply Base and Aircraft Refueling/Staging site. The majority of operations at or near Minden-Tahoe Airport will take place from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., June 18-19. Increased airfield operations and noise levels in the vicinity of the airport may be attributed to the military exercise.
The units are sensitive to the impact this exercise may have on local citizens. Measures will be taken to reduce the amount of noise associated with this training.
All aspects of this training have been coordinated with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to ensure the training will be carried out safely.
The Marines respectfully request that local citizens who find themselves near the training venues keep a safe distance for themselves and for the safety of the service members.
This training will enhance Marines’ combat skills in a simulated urban environment similar to those they may find during combat missions.
This military exercise is conducted to maintain a high level of combat readiness for those deploying with the 11th MEU. The mission of the 11th MEU is to provide a rapid-response force capable of conducting conventional amphibious and selected maritime operations from the sea, surface or air.
The MEU is composed of a command element and three major subordinate elements; they are Battalion Landing Team 1/4, Marine Medium Tilt Squadron 163 and Combat Logistics Battalion 11, the ground, aviation and logistics elements respectively.
