Failed getaway leads to felony charges

A 29-year-old woman is facing a felony charge for failing to stop at the scene of an accident after deputies say she drove a Jeep off a sidewalk and the wrong way down a one-way street without her headlights on.

Jade Marie Bernhardt, 29, was arrested early June 5 after a Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted her white Jeep Wrangler in the Nugget Casino south overflow parking lot at about 11:40 p.m.

According to the arrest report, the driver’s door was completely open and a person was seated in the front seat.

As the deputy turned his patrol vehicle around, the Jeep accelerated rapidly without its headlights on, drove off the sidewalk and turned west onto Proctor Street, which is a one-way street designated only for eastbound traffic.

After initiating a traffic stop at North Carson and Telegraph streets, the deputy reported Bernhardt smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and red, watery eyes. She was unsteady on her feet and told the deputy she had consumed “two beers and a shot of liquor,” the report states.
