After winning the Northern Nevada Regional Championship earlier this month, Virginia City Muckers High School Baseball Team won the State Championship Tournament held May 14-16 in Las Vegas, securing three straight wins against Tonapah 9-5, Alamo 6-1 and Whittell 14-3.
The Muckers were undefeated in Regional and State Championship play for the second consecutive year, winning 12 straight games. To get there, the Muckers won the Northern Nevada Regional Championship held May 9, prevailing with victories against Wells 8-7 in 8 innings, Whittell 6-4 and Whittell 2-0.
There were many great moments in these games, including 2 Grand Slams, one hit in game one against Tonapah, by Clint Hess and the other in game 2 against Alamo, hit by Carlos Robledo. Both Grand Slam home runs secured victories.
The pitching was exceptional, Isaiah Yoder threw five and one-third innings against Tonapah, Clint Hess threw 7 innings against Alamo and Carlos Robledo threw 4 and two-thirds innings in the 5 inning game against Whittell, (shorten due to the 10 run rule). The entire team’s performance was amazing with great defensive plays and powerful offensive hitting. The Muckers finished the season 21-3 (overall) and were 19-1 against league opponents.
The team is coached by Fred Bendure, a long time Carson City resident. In his first two seasons, he has led the Muckers to Two Division IV, Nevada State Championships.
