A 25-year-old Reno woman was arrested at 11 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of Carson Street for possession of methamphetamine and credits that did not belong to her.

According to the arrest report, Melanie Echeverria was arrested after SET team deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driving on Stewart Street after it returned with having expired registration.

On contacting the driver, later identified as Echeverria, she told deputies she had known her registration was expired, but didn’t know it was suspended. She also said she does not have insurance, but recently got her tax return.

Deputies asked if she had any illegal drugs in the vehicle, and she said no  but “looked away,” according to the report. The deputy asked if she’d consent to a search of the vehicle, and she said no.

K-9 Deputy Cash was dispatched to the scene who provided a free air sniff of the vehicle. He provided a positive alert, and deputies began searching the vehicle and discovered the following:

  • A white/black glasses case containing methamphetamine pipe
  • A blue bag containing: a small clear plastic bag with methamphetamine; a plastic bag containing three bags of methamphetamine and a methamphetamine pipe; a hide-a-key rock containing methamphetamine; multiple players cards belonging to Echeverria; a tooter straw
  • Five credit cards belonging to another individual inside the center console

Inside the trunk of the vehicle deputies also discovered multiple tin foil cases with suspected fentanyl residue, a broken methamphetamine bong, and a prescription bottle with suspected methamphetamine residue inside.

Deputies asked Echeverria about the drugs, and according to the report she told them that she’d just gotten the vehicle back from her boyfriend. She said while she knew about the drugs, she didn’t want to get rid of them out of fear she’d get in trouble with her boyfriend.

When asked why her players cards were inside the same bag as the drugs, she “did not have an answer.”

Deputies asked about the credit cards belonging to another person, and she said she didn’t know anything about it other than her boyfriend having the vehicle recently.

Deputies then asked for a phone number to call the boyfriend, and she did not want to provide one according to the report.

Deputies took her into custody without issue.

Bail: $8,500
