Mia may be a little cross-eyed, but she has a way of looking straight into your heart. This petite short-haired tabby is estimated to be around 5 years old, with beautiful markings, an incredibly soft coat, and a face full of personality. Her history before arriving at Catmandu is mostly a mystery, but her recent journey tells the story of a cat who narrowly escaped a very sad fate.

A couple of months ago, Mia appeared at a large feral colony. The caretaker quickly noticed something different about her. While the other cats kept their distance, Mia acted far more domestic and seemed interested in people. Then she developed a noticeably round belly, leading everyone to believe kittens might be on the way. Concerned for her safety, the caretaker trapped her and brought her in for what was expected to be a routine spay surgery.
Instead, the veterinarian discovered Mia was suffering from pyometra, a severe and life-threatening infection of the uterus. Without surgery, she likely would not have survived much longer. Thankfully, the infection was caught in time, and after her emergency surgery, Mia recovered in the caretaker’s bathroom while they searched for somewhere safe for her to go. The caretaker desperately wanted to spare Mia from returning to life on the streets, but already had 10 cats of her own. When no other rescue was willing to take her, Catmandu stepped in. And we are very glad we did.
Mia is one of those delightfully quirky cats who will keep you smiling. In addition to her adorably cross-eyed gaze, her right eye stays slightly squinty, likely the result of an untreated eye infection earlier in life. She also has a very unusual way of communicating: instead of meowing, Mia growls. Happily. When she’s enjoying pets, when she’s excited about dinner, or when she’s feeling content, she lets out little growly sounds that are equal parts hilarious and endearing. Add in her constantly wagging tail — which seems to have a mind of its own whenever she’s curious or interested in something — and you have a cat overflowing with character.
Most importantly, Mia is very sweet. She enjoys attention, loves being petted, and is clearly happy to be safe indoors where she no longer has to fend for herself. She tolerates other cats, if necessary, but would likely be happiest as the only pet where she can soak up all the love and attention for herself. We do not know how she feels about dogs.
Mia is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on her vaccinations. Now all she needs is a family willing to appreciate her funny little growls, expressive tail, and wonderfully unique face. Sometimes the cats who arrive with the biggest quirks turn out to have the biggest hearts.
