The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified the two 19-year-old men who died in a single vehicle rollover crash that happened Saturday afternoon on Highway 50 near Silver Springs. A third man remains in the hospital with serious injuries.
Hardin Lee Aigner and Fredrick Wayne Smith, both of Silver Springs, died as a result of the crash in which a 1995 blue Ford Ranger pickup overturned, ejecting them and a 20-year-old passenger, Lee Owen Polson of Fernley, who remains in the hospital, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson.
The crash was reported to NHP at around 4:30 pm, and happened on Highway 50, approximately 5 miles west of the four way stop, (“four corners”) in Silver Springs.
The preliminary crash investigation details indicate a 1995 blue Ford Ranger pickup driven by Aigner along with right front passenger, Polson, 20, and right rear passenger Smith were traveling westbound on US 50 toward Stagecoach when the pickup’s left rear tire lost its tread causing Mr. Aigner to lose control. The pickup drove off the North shoulder and overturned ejecting all three occupants from the vehicle. None of the occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.
Mr. Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident. Mr. Aigner and Mr. Polson were transported to Renown Hospital by Care Flight. The driver Mr. Aigner succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Mr. Polson is still in the hospital recovering from his serious injuries received during the accident.
This area of Highway 50 is one lane in each direction with a no passing zone and the speed limit is 65 mph.
