School zones, do you know how fast you are going? With the weather getting warmer, it is easy to forget that school is still in session and the speed zones are still in effect. When entering a school zone, pay attention to the 15 mile per hour (mph) posted limit or the flashing signal lights.
15 mph may seem like an eternity when driving in the zones but imagine how you would feel should you strike a child who is crossing the street. Where crossing guards are posted, pay attention to their directions. They are in place to keep you and the children safe.
Watch for kids who may cross where there is no crosswalk. Although they should know better, developing minds are not always focused. Parents, take the time to teach your children the rules of walking alongside the roadways.
Walk with them to school and show them how to properly cross the street utilizing the crosswalks or, where available, use the traffic signal crosswalks. When driving behind vehicles that are observing the 15 mph speed limit don’t become impatient and start tailgating them.
Should that vehicle need to suddenly stop due to a child running out into the road, you may hit them and in turn force their vehicle into the child. Put down the cell phone and pay attention to your driving and the activities that are going on around you. Our children are depending on you to drive with care.
