The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Mounted Unit hosted the 2026 Northern Nevada Mounted School, April 20-25, 2026, a week-long certification course designed for agencies across northern Nevada. This annual training and certification highlight’s the CCSO Mounted Unit’s commitment to community service and safety, utilizing the unique capabilities of horses, riders, and dedicated non-riding support personnel.

The Mounted Unit plays a vital role in enhancing community safety through a variety of functions. Members participate in ceremonial rides, parades, and assist with crowd and traffic control. They are also involved in search and rescue operations, responding to requests from the Sheriff’s Office for trained horses and riders in any capacity needed.

The CCSO Mounted Unit was formed in 1996 and is currently lead by Mounted Unit Commander Joe Bruno since 2002 (24 years.)

Composed of Deputies and private citizens, the Mounted Unit relies on volunteers who generously contribute their time, horses, and equipment to serve the community. This collaborative effort not only fosters a strong bond between the unit and the community but also promotes public safety and engagement.
