Western Nevada College
Don’t miss several opportunities this week to honor the most successful team members in the history of the Western Nevada College softball program. The Wildcats will hold their annual team banquet starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at Gold Dust West casino in Carson City.
The public is invited to attend but must reserve a spot as soon as possible by calling assistant coach Sam Herceg at 775-721-9947.
The banquet will include cocktails, a buffet dinner and awards presentations. The cost is $25 per person.
“This is a unique banquet to thank the program as a whole for everything that happened in our eight years,” said WNC coach Leah Wentworth, referencing the program being eliminated after this season. “It’s about honoring all those people who have been involved and helped make the program what it is.”
Also on Saturday, Wentworth and assistants Herceg and Bethany Henry-Herman will honor the team’s sophomore players between games of a doubleheader against Snow College. The twin bill begins at noon at Edmonds Sports Complex at Pete Livermore Park, 1555 Livermore Lane.
The Wildcats’ sophomore-laden roster set a program mark with 23 wins as freshmen last year. They also produced the program’s first winning home record and won two games at the Region 18 tournament.
“We’ll thank them for their time here,” Wentworth said. “They’ll be escorted on the field by family members, and we’ll talk about what they have brought to the program, what they’ll remember and what they’ll do next.”
WNC’s first of four final home games with Snow starts at 1 p.m. Friday. The teams are battling for third place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. The fourth-place Wildcats are 13-19 in SWAC games, while third-place Snow is 19-13.
