A spring storm has brought winter-like conditions Saturday morning with snow showers in the lower valleys around Carson City and surrounding counties and heavier snowfall in the mountains.

Snow began falling in Carson City at around 7:30 a.m. after early morning rain showers. Snow had been expected to be above 5,000 feet. It is snowing and accumulating at Lake Tahoe, where chain controls are in effect over mountain passes.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. Sunday for the greater Lake Tahoe area, as well as in southern Lyon and Mineral counties. Snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches with 10 or more inches along highest peaks including the White Mountains.

Snowfall could impact weekend travel, especially across portions of Highway 50 over Spooner, I-80 over Donner Pass, US 50 over Echo Pass and State Route 207 over Kingsbury Grade, along with State Routes 359, 338, and 6, according to National Weather Service forecasters.

The heaviest snowfall expected Saturday morning, forecasters said, noting that snow will struggle to accumulate on roadways during the daytime hours, though isolated heavy snow showers may bring greater accumulations Saturday afternoon.

Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution while traveling. See NVroads.com for the latest road conditions or call 511.
