This weekend’s spring storm delivered snow to the Sierra and a dusting around the foothills overnight as the system continues Sunday and will likely linger into Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Chains and snow tires are required over Sierra mountain passes. Snow showers will continue throughout the Sierra, with rates around 0.5-1 and inch per hour. As the main cold low moves overhead, instability will increase this afternoon, bringing more snow. NWS says snow totals of 12 to 14 inches remains possible around Lake Tahoe with up to 18 inches along the highest peaks.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. Sunday evening. For the latest travel updates go to NVroads.com or call 5-1-1.

For Carson City and surrounding western Nevada counties, there’s a 20 to 30 percent chance of rain and showers Sunday. Southwest winds will increase this afternoon bringing gusty conditions. Otherwise, forecasters say we can expect partly sunny skies with high temperatures from the upper 40s to near 50.

The majority of the precipitation comes to an end later Sunday evening, NWS forecasters say, but, there remains a 30 to 50 percent chance for leftover showers through Monday afternoon in the Sierra, mainly from the Tahoe Basin south into Mono County.

Looking ahead, NWS forecasters say there’ll be brief warmup Tuesday and Wednesday with highs near mid-April averages before another fast moving storm drops into the region bringing windy conditions, valley rain and mountain snow showers and cooler temperatures.
