UPDATE: A storm arriving Sunday is expected to bring gusty winds, rain with a chance of snow showers to Carson City and surrounding counties and up to 2 feet of snow in the Sierra through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
At this time, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Lake Tahoe and Sierra from 5 p.m. Sunday to 11 p.m. Monday. Heavy snow is expected with between 1 to 2 feet along higher Sierra ridges with snow accumulations between 6 to 12 inches in elevations between 5,500 feet 6,500 feet.

The initial wave early Sunday will bring lighter snow amounts. Snow intensity picks up Sunday evening and continues through Monday afternoon, with a 12-hour period of snowfall rates between 1 and 2 inches per hour, forecasters said. This will bring impacts to both the Monday morning and evening commutes, especially for Sierra communities. Chain controls and travel delays are likely.
For the western Nevada valleys, showers will be light through Sunday, with minimal spillover.
There is a Wind Advisory for Carson City or surrounding valley areas from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday along with a 50 percent chance of rain and snow showers in the afternoon. Winds may gust as high as 45 mph to 50 mph with gusts up to 55 mph in wind prone areas.
The best opportunity for Western Nevada spillover will be Monday morning, ahead of the morning commute. Snow levels will be about 1,000 feet above valley floors, according to NWS forecasters. While little to no accumulations are likely, slick roads and travel delays are a good bet early Monday morning.
Rain and snow showers are likely Monday with snow showers between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. with mostly rain after 11 a.m., forecasters said. Less than a half inch of snow is possible.
Unsettled weather is expected through Tuesday. Check back for updates.
