The American Cancer Society Kickoff Event is Sat., April 3, at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa

The American Cancer Society is hosting their kickoff extravaganza with an all-ages show with hip hop artist Mike E and local/regional artists Lavish Green and Outta-Control. The Afro Flow Tour with Mike E will benefit the South Lake Tahoe Relay for Life, (http://www.sltrelay.com) Sat., April 3, at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa.

The event kicks off at 3:30 p.m. with opportunities to meet and greet the artists, learn more about Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, register a team and celebrate those who’ve beaten the fight against cancer. Live music starts at 6 p.m. If teams register prior to the show they will receive five free tickets. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under and free for any cancer survivor. All ticket sales will benefit South Lake Tahoe’s Relay for Life event. In addition, if you are 21 years of age or older your ticket will give you free admission to Opal nightclub inside MontBleu that evening.

“We’re thrilled to have Mike E, Lavish Green and Outta Control all come together for a stellar performance you won’t want to miss,” said Allan Warren with the American Cancer Society. “MontBleu along with the musicians and our Relay for Life Committee have dedicated their time and money to make this event come together. We look forward to sharing an evening with you to celebrate those who’ve beaten cancer, remember those we’ve lost and fight back against this disease that takes too much.”

Mike E has a partnership with American Cancer Society and he does outreach with schools, youth groups, hospitals and service organizations across the country. Leading up the event he will be out in the South Lake community motivating young people to stay healthy and smoke free.

A Relay Team of musicians from the Lake Tahoe Community College headed up by instructor Eric Hellberg, along with the Relay for Life Committee and MontBleu staff are organizing the event.

This year marks 5th South Lake Tahoe’s Relay for Life event. The all-night walking event symbolizes cancer never sleeps will be at Kahle Community Park Sat. Aug. 7, beginning at 4 p.m., concluding around 8 a.m. on Aug. 8. The committee’s goal is to have 30 teams registered after kickoff and 50 teams before the Relay for Life, Aug. 7-8. The committee is encouraging teams and the community to raise more than $100,000 to help fight cancer prior to the event.

In celebration of Tahoe’s 5th Anniversary the committee presents ‘Relay for Life Taste of Tahoe’ to support a cure for cancer, the vitality of our community and success of our local restaurants. Taste of Tahoe features one restaurant from the South Lake Tahoe area (California and Nevada) each week for the weeks leading up to South Lake Tahoe Relay for Life with a final highlight of all the restaurant booths at Taste of Tahoe Restaurant Row during the Relay for Life event, Aug. 7-8. The focus is to raise money for the fight against cancer while having great food, drinks, entertainment and fun with family, friends, coworkers and neighbors at our favorite local restaurants. Each restaurant sponsor makes a donation toward the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life fundraising efforts for the week it’s spotlighted along with the generous contributions of the business sponsors and media sponsors.

Participating restaurants include: Blue Angel Cage, Bistro Danielle, Brooks Bar & Deck at Edgewood Tahoe, Chevys Fresh Mex, Fox and Hound, Mott Canyon, Murphy’s Irish Pub and Rockwater Restaurant and Sushi Pier; Corporate Nevada and Erik Watada State Farm Agency are business sponsors. “You thought last year’s event was fun with the dunk tank, fire dancers, live music, karaoke, etc., just wait until this year,” said Jenn Boyd, Relay for Life event chair. “We have an outstanding committee who continue to volunteer their time and provide ideas to make this event bigger and better, but in order to pull it off we need support from the entire community. I encourage each of you to make the time to attend and get involved whether it’s on a team, as a volunteer or a sponsor.”

The Relay for Life committee is seeking more teams, volunteers and sponsors to help organize the event. The next committee meeting is Tues. April 13, at 6 p.m. upstairs at Blue Angle Café.
