UPDATE: A Carson City Fire Department battalion chief has confirmed the fire at the landfill was knocked down as of 6:18 p.m.

Crews responded Sunday evening to the city’s landfill at 3600 Flint Drive in east Carson City shortly before 6 p.m. after Carson City dispatch alerted the fire department to multiple calls of people seeing black smoke coming from the landfill.

First responding firefighters confirmed the fire was coming from the landfill and sent additional engines and Public Works. The fire was reported to be around 10 feet by 20 feet in size.

According to a battalion chief on scene, crews extinguishing it said the fire didn’t appear to be large or growing at a rapid rate of spread. They are now in mop up stage, dumping water to prevent any flareups.

Fires at the landfill generally have not threatened structures and are mostly contained to inside the landfill itself.

Over the years multiple fires have been reported at the landfill. Many of the fires are believed to be caused by discarded batteries that heat up, explode and cause the garbage underneath them to ignite.

We will update as information becomes available.
