Western Nevada College Softball split a doubleheader with Snow College Friday afternoon. In the first match-up, WNC fell to Snow College 7-1, Dakota Robinson started in the circle. She went five innings, and was replaced by Kristina George. Robinson took the loss for the Wildcats. In the second game, pitcher Nicole Lesniak started for the Wildcats. She went the distance to earn the win. Final score, 7-4 WNC.

The teams will play a second doubleheader Saturday. The first game began at noon with a second game to follow at 2 p.m. at Edmonds Field, 1555 Livermore Lane, Carson City. Saturday evening, the Wildcats host a 5K Glow Run Fundraiser at El Charro Avitia. Check-in starts at 5:30 p.m., and the run begins at 6 p.m.

In game one, Snow scored two runs in the second inning, which the Wildcats answered with one of their own; Gabriella Canibeyaz walked, Robinson was hit by pitch, and Covione bunted to load the bases for the WIldcats. Bailey Henderson made contact to score Canibeyaz putting WNC on the board. 2-1, Snow.

The Wildcats were unable to capitalize on singles by Melanie Mecham in the third, and Canibeyaz in the fourth. Snow scored four runs in the fifth, prompting a pitching change. Kristina George replaced Robinson. Snow tapped in one additional run before the Wildcats could retire the side. Canibeyaz had a single in the sixth, but WNC couldn’t recover. Snow won, 7-1.

“We had a tough time stringing our hits together and making adjustments at the plate,” said. Coach Leah Wentworth. “We had runners on, but didn’t come up with timely hits.”

In the second game, Snow scored one run in the first inning, which WNC answered with two runs. Makaylee Jaussi led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Mecham. Kacie Freudenberger doubled, and scored on a single by Briauna Carter. After one inning, 3-1 WNC.

Snow added one more run in the second and WNC put up one of their own when Samantha Bell walked and scored on a triple by Jaussi. Mecham singled, but Jaussi was tagged out attempting to score. Mecham scored on a double by Lauren Lesniak. After two innings, 5-2 WNC.

In the third, WNC held off Snow and Carter led off the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun. 6-2, WNC. In the bottom of the fourth, Jaussi was hit by pitch, Mecham singled, and Canibeyaz singled to score Jaussi. Snow changed pitchers, slowing the ‘Cats and ending the inning 7-2, WNC.

Snow put up a solo homerun in the fifth and one run in the sixth. They allowed nothing from WNC for the remainder of the game. Final score. 7-4 WNC.

Wentworth said, “We did a better job making adjustments at the plate. We were aggressive on the bases and were able to generate some runs on balls in the infield. Nicole (Lesniak) did a good job of keeping batters off balance, we played better defense and came up with some great plays.”
