Even though it’s technically winter until Friday, a strong high pressure system is setting up over the region that will make conditions feel more like early June than mid-March.

Record-breaking temperatures are likely this last week as we prepare for the end of winter and beginning of spring, National Weather Service forecasters say.

Here in Carson City and surrounding counties, people should begin to feel the heat climb starting Tuesday, with temperatures in the low to mid 80s in western Nevada valleys and 70s for Sierra communities. By the end of the week, upper 80s are expected for western Nevada, with lower valleys across the Nevada Basin and Range flirting with low 90s, according to the weather service.

Upper 70s to low 80s will be found in Sierra valleys along US-395 in Alpine and Mono counties for Thursday and Friday. Forecasters anticipate record high temperatures
being challenged or set this week before the ridge nudges eastward over the following weekend, forecasters said.

The warm temperatures will accelerate snowmelt, leading to rivers running fast and cold, NWS forecasters said.

Forecasters said winds will likely pick up this weekend along ridges as temperatures hold around 15 degrees above seasonal averages.

In the meantime, stay cool and hydrate.
